The Pacifica United Strikers, Girls U13 team travel to Reno

for the 2010 Reno Zephyr Tournament.

June 2010

Twelve teams from California, Oregan and Nevada gathered in Reno for this years tournament.

The Strikers had a great tournament with some excellent team play and fine individual performances. They played great defense all weekend with fullbacks Corey Rhodes and Skye Hammer at the top of their game. Brianna Falk scored a great goal volleying home a cross from close range and Jessica Parque was a nightmare for opposing defenders with 7 goals scored from the five games played
In bracket play, Game #1. Strikers 2 Sierra Galaxy 0, Game #2. Strikers 3 Tahoe Classic 1. Game #3. International Germany 3 Strikers 1.

The two wins and 1 loss were enough to get the Strikers into the semi final where they would face the fancied Placer United Prestige who had won all their bracket games, scored 12 goals and conceded 0 goals.
Semi-final: Pacifica Strikers 1 Placer United 0.

The Strikers played their best game of the year in this game. Fullbacks, Corey Rhodes and Skye Hammer were on fire and kept the dangerous outside forwards from getting past them. This, coupled with the usual steady play of centerbacks Frances DeFreitas, Jordan Kotlar and goalkeeper Katelyn Brown, made it difficult to score. The Strikers controlled midfield play where Coralie Ringuette, Lina Miller, Sarah Walley, Taylor Russell, Sara Acquisti and Fiona Benjamin moved the ball well and strong play from Madison Kavanaugh and Barbara Alberts never allowed the Placer team to get anything going. Jessica Parque scored the only goal of the game with an unstoppable shot in the first half which gave the Strikers the lead that they would never relinquish. Forwards Brianna Falk and Marena Kibblewhite, working tirelessly up front and also had chances but Placer only allowed the 1 goal which kept the game exciting right to the final whistle.
Final: Strikers 1 Santa Rosa Cyclones 2.

The Santa Rosa team played with more energy than the Strikers and jumped out to a 2 goal lead in the first half. The Strikers have always been a good second half team and fought their way back into the game with a goal from Jessica Parque but the girls were unable to get the equaliser.
The Strikers were disappointed not to win the final but looking back, they should be proud of how well they played.

PUSC Voltage U18 GIRLS Win 2009 District Cup

District II Cup is the largest youth soccer competition in the California Youth Soccer Association North, and one of the largest in California. District II extends south from San Francisco to Monterey, and does not include Pacifica, but this year District I teams were allowed to enter. Playing in the U19 Girls Silver division, the U18 Pacifica United Soccer Club Voltage played some tough teams over two days in Morgan Hill to take the Cup title. This is the Voltage’s first season playing together.

A great jobs from their leadership to pull this team together and have them playing at such a high level! GREAT JOB, and congratulations to all.

PUSC INTERNATIONALS U13 BOYS DIVISION 3

It may have been a cloudy day in San Carlos, but the parents of the Internationals were beaming with pride. The Internationals came on the field short players due to injuries, other commitments and late arrivals, but those that were there came with game faces on and ready to play. Not a easy task given the 8 a.m. start to an away game! The San Carlos Cyclones surprised the Internationals early as they waited for the rest of the team to arrive. Only 3 minutes into the game the Cyclones scored their first goal. Benny Dawson was courageous as goal keeper, filling in for the seasoned and talented regular. A couple of late arrivals came in to fill out to a full team on the field, only to see two players leave the field due to injuries.

Defense held tight throughout the game, with outstanding performances by Jordan Alcaraz and Christopher Harrison. Offense had a few key shots on goal that hit the goal post, to the dismay of the crowd. Harry Bode finally kicked the ball to the back of the net for the Internationals’ only goal of the morning.

Despite a valiant try by the short Internationals, the final score was San Carlos Cyclones 4, Internationals 1.

PUSC INTERNATIONALS U13 BOYS DIVISION 3

The season has been a challenging one so far, but three tough losses haven’t dampened the International’s spirit. Welcoming Tryston Cruz and Thomas Linker to the team, the Internationals started the season with high hopes. Today, our defense played strong against the SF Rebel Rams. First half saw many saves by goal keeper Rafael Ramirez. David Esser made two clean up goals in the first half, one off a free kick by Juan Rodriguez and the other off a shot on goal by Cruz. The crowd was hoping for an Esser hat trick, but it wasn’t meant to be. Chris Harrison, James Arjas, and Jordan Alcaraz played bold and blockading defense, holding the Rebel Rams to only one goal. The first half ended with the Internationals leading 2-1. The second half took the Internationals by surprise. Holding ground for the first 7 minutes into the half, the Rams scored three times in 5 minutes. Regaining composure, the defense held them to no more goals, but our offense couldn’t deliver.

The final score, Internationals 2, SF Rebel Rams 4

PUSC Ambronzino League:

PUSC STRIKERS - Girls U13 CLASS ONE

Game 1 Pacifica Strikers V Santa Cruz Breakers

The Strikers played their first Class 1 league game against the Santa Cruz Breakers at foggy Upper Oceana. After 5 minutes, the Breakers got off to a dream start when their tall center forward took a cross from a free kick and treaded the ball inside the near post. The field played very heavy and it was difficult to control the ball on the slippery ground. Both teams played great defense and Madison Kavanaugh in goal had another fine game. Sara Acquisti again played solidly at full back and Cory Rhodes also did well. The Strikers team worked hard throughout the game and Jessica Parque had the best chances but was unlucky not to score.

Final. Strikers 0-Breakers 1

Game 2 Pacifica Strikers V Sunnyvale Extreme

The Strikers played much better in this second game of the season and in the first half they dominated play throughout the field and created many scoring opportunities. After 10 minutes, a fine pass from Crystal Patten freed Jessica Parque in the middle and Parque gave the keeper no chance with the first score of the day. Constant pressure from the Strikers forced a corner kick and the perfect kick from Coralie Ringuette found Parque in the box who made a superb header for goal #2. Vanessa Kibblewhite played a diagonal ball to Brianna Falk who shot wide barely missing the goal. Sara Acquisti picked up a loose ball from a corner kick and was unlucky not to score when she hit a rocket off the crossbar. The Strikers kept the pressure on all day. The Extreme got it together in the second half and put their own pressure on the Strikers back line where Frances DeFreitas and Jordan Kotlar were busy. DeFreitas cleared the ball in a goalmouth scramble to deny the Extreme but the Extreme did get one back to make it exciting right to the finish. The Girls have their first CLASS ONE Victory!

Final: Strikers 2--Extreme 1

The NEW PUSC U10 Girls Stingrays make league debute

Pacifica Stingrays 2
Palo Alto White Lightning 3

For the season opener down at Cubberly Fields, the Pacifica United Soccer Club Stingrays had an exciting game with their Palo Alto opponents. The Stingrays scored first for a goal from Deirdre Heaveyto make it 1 - 0. The Lightning came back and tied with a great effort. Then Reiko Harris was able to put the ball in the net to put us in the lead for the first half.

During the 2nd half, The Lightning came back to tie it up 2 -2 AND in the final minutes of the game the Lightning was able to score putting them in the lead for good.

Nathalie Grogan had an astounding first half in the goal and there was a good effort by all the Stingrays as they enter the Redwood Fall League.

We are proud of you!

THE SIXTH ANNUAL PACIFICA COAST CUP

With over 60 Teams competing this year Pacifica United Soccer Club put it all together to show the rest of northern California how to host a tournament.

Congradulations to the Strikers and Pioneers who took it down to the wire

with grit and determination!

The Pacifica United Pioneers U-12 girls kicked off their 2009/10 soccer season by finishing second in the Pacifica United Soccer Club Coast Cup Tournament.

SINCE THE PIONEERS JOINED PUSC THEY HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE DEDICATION, DRIVE AND COMMITMENT OF CHAMPIONS. The Players, Coaches and Families should all be commended.

This was a good test for the Pioneers who’ll play division one in the fall league and will be up for the challenge of playing in the advanced league.

Pioneers 2
Los Gatos Lynx 0

The Pioneers endured a lot of pressure in the opening half , but solid play from Veronica Alberts, Madison Gomes and Sofia Montenegro kept the pioneers in the game . In the second half the Pioneers took control and two goals from striker Georgina Stiegeler was enough clinch the game.

Pioneers 1
Hayward United 0.

This game was a tough challenge for the Pioneers as Hayward played very physical. Shannon Grady, Hayley Chawke, Diana Lopez and Kierra Kessler played great in defense . In the second half Slonne Bleyle scored a superb goal to win the game .

Pioneers 6
Middletown Steam 1

The Pioneers proved too strong for the steam as goals from Emma Wilson 2, Ariana Crame , Riyan Renz, Kierra Kessler and Slonne Bleyle propelled the Pioneers into the Championship.

Mustang Extreme 2
Pioneers 1.

The championship game was a repeat of the Association Cup semi final played back in January, and turned out to be another thrilling game. The Pioneers got off to a dream start as Stiegeler scored after thirty seconds . The game was non stop action from both sides and Dahlia Rodrigez was on her game in goals as she made some great saves through out the game .The Extreme tied it up just before half time. Julia Rodriguez and Katie Hall came close to scoring only to be denied by the post and goalkeeper. Marren Smith made some great runs from midfield as the Pioneers kept up the pressure. But just like the game in January it was the Extreme who scored at the end to win another great game between these two teams.

PUSC's other champion caliber team is the Girls U13 STRIKERS

SINCE THEIR INCEPTION THEY TOO HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE PASSION AND DEDICATION TO RISE TO THE TOP OF THEIR DIVISION

Game # 1
Pacifica Strikers 3
Petaluma Fireballs 3

The tournament and season got off to a fast start. Right from the kickoff, the Strikers worked the ball down the field and Coralie Ringuette passed to Jessica Parque who went around the charging goalkeeper and tapped in to the empty net. The Strikers dominated play with the midfield of Fiona Benjamin, Sarah Walley, Ringuette and Crystal Patten all getting shots at goal and the defense of Lina Miller, Jordan Kotlar, Skye Hammer, Frances DeFreitas easily controlling play at the back. The Fireball goalkeeper made several fine saves but it was Parque who added 2 more goals to give the Strikers a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Fireballs came out a different team in the second half and started to find some openings in the Strikers back line. Madison Kavanaugh in goal had to make some fine saves but the Fireballs broke down the right side and made a great cross, which was kicked in to get their first score. The Fireballs kept up the pressure and scored twice off strong midfield play to even the game at 3-3. Both teams had opportunities to score the winner but escellent goalkeeping from both teams prevented any further scoring. Final score. 3-3.

Game # 2.
Pacifica Strikers 3
Santa Cruz Jaws 0

Both teams started out cautiously but ten minutes into the game, Parque got the Strikers going with a great shot past the goalkeeper. The Strikers took control of the game with strong play from the midfield and defense. Jordan Kotlar took a shot from way out and the surprised Jaws goalkeeper couldn't stop it from hitting the net. Crystal Patten made some great runs in the forward line and was unlucky not to have scored. Sarah Acquisti again played her usual strong game and together with Frances DeFreitas, Skye Hammer, Lina Miller and Cory Rhodes, the Jaws never got many chances. The powerful play from Parque caused opposing defense nightmares all weekend and she gave the Strikers another goal to lead 3-0 at halftime. The second half was again controlled by the Strikers with chances falling to Parque, Brianna Falk and Taylor Russell but good goalkeeping prevented any further scores. Final score. 3-0

Game #3.
Pacifica Strikers 4
Montclair Clippers 0

The Strikers needed to get maximum points from this game to advance to the Championship game and they didn't disappoint. The first half saw the usual strong defense from Strikers Kotlar, DeFreitas, Miller, Acquisti and Hammer and goalkeeper Madison Kavanaugh. The midfield play from Cory Rhodes, Kathlyn Brown, Taylor Russell, Falk, Walley and Ringuette kept a constant flow of balls to the front line where forwards Vanessa Kibblewhite, Fiona Benjamin, Patten and Parque all had chances. The fine play was rewarded after Parque got around the defense and crossed in front of the goal where Benjamin expertly turned the ball into the net for the first score. Another superb run by Parque ended with an unstoppable shot to score just before the half.
The Strikers never let up in the second half and dominated play throughout. Benjamin and Parque again scored to make it 4-0.

Championship Game

Pacifica Strikers 1
Brisbane Blast 2

The Strikers qualified with the highest points from the Preliminary round and the Blast had to beat the defending Association Cup Champions, Folsom Wildcats to make it to the final game. These two teams have had some great games this past year and this one was another. The strong defensive play of both teams limited many goal-scoring chances but Parque kept working hard and blasted home off the post to take the halftime lead at 1-0. The Blast came out looking for the equalizer but the strong play of new goalkeeper Madison Kavanaugh and stingy defense from the Strikers made it difficult to score. With 15 minutes left in the game, the Blast got the break they needed and were awarded a penalty from a hand ball in the box. The shot was expertly blocked by Kavanaugh but the rebound was knocked home by the Blast to equalize at 1-1. The rest of the game saw chances for both teams to take the lead but the winning goal came with a few minutes remaining from a free
kick just outside the box. The Blast forward expertly placed her shot over the wall of Strikers and it went in off the crossbar for the winner. The Strikers fought hard for a late equalizer but were denied by the Blast defense.

Final.
Blast 2-Strikers 1.

The Strikers were disappointed not to have won but played very well all weekend and look forward to the upcoming season.

PUSC INTERNATIONALS WIN OPENING GAME DESPITE PLAYING SHORT

PUSC Internationals 5
SJ United 1

Supporters of the PUSC Internationals looked worried as the team took the field for their opening game with only 10 players and our opponents team had a full roster of 18. Fears were quickly put to rest when it only took 30 seconds for the Internationals to take their first shot on goal. Offensive dominance came early and never left. The Internationals displayed the passing skills and ball handling they had been working on over the past few weeks. Daniel Hazelhofer and his blazing speed was the first to stun the United team from San Jose with his first goal 6 minutes into the game. He followed that up with his second goal 4 minutes later. Abel Campos couldn't be shut down by the opponents, putting the ball into the net next. Not to be out shined by his cousin, Gabriel Campos came up with his own goals, one in the first half and one in the second.

The Internationals defense was also on fire. Chris Harrison and Jordan Alcaraz stopped United's midfield from advancing throughout the game, with Harrison stopping one sure goal by backing up his keeper when he was out of the box. Goalkeeper, Rafael Ramirez, only allowed one goal to cross the line. Harry Bode also showed great hustle and possession dominance.

This was a fantastic start to the 2009 Spring season, despite playing one man short.

An "Incredibles" Road to the Championship

U14 Girls PUSC

The PUSC Incredibles needed to win their last two games to win the Redwood League championship. They traveled down to Palo Alto to play the tough Stanford Lightning. In the rain the Incredibles came out a little slow. The lightning scored 1st to make 1-0. The Incredibles came right back with Bonnie Corbelli blasting a corner kick into the box to a streaking Dominique Gio who headed the ball into the back of the net for the tie. The tie was broken when Elizabeth Smith blasted in a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead. The Lightning came right back to tie the score. With minutes to play in the 1st half Bonnie Corbelli kick in a penalty kick for a 3-2 lead.

The defense took over the 2nd half. Caroline Martinez, Alex Gomes, Madison Gould, Chiara Lewis, Rene Sweeney, who had the flu were relentless in their defensive play. Keeper Brittney Lewis made some tough save to secure the win.

The next day brought in the other Palo Alto team to Pacifica. This tough team had given up only 4 goals all season and was a big physical team. The Incredibles couldn't match their size but excelled in the speed department. Ashley Garcia started off by flying pass the Palo Alto defense and just missed a shot. Seeing Ashley's speed was going to be a problem for them they pulled back their defense around her. One thing the Palo Alto team failed to realize is that the Incredibles have a loaded roster of talented players. Palo Alto scored the 1st goal of the game. Minutes later Dominique Gio headed in a corner kick to tie the game. This fired up the Incredibles. Taylor Gaggero then blasted a shot that the Palo Alto keeper just deflected away for a corner kick. This is where Alyssa Shores took over the game. Alyssa headed in a corner kick for a 2-1 lead. Midfielder's Shannon Mooney, Bri McAlexander, Sara Bradford kept the ball away from Palo Alto for the remainder of the 1st half.

The 2nd half was all Shores. She scored (3) 2nd half goals. The 1st goal coming on a Corbelli penalty kick, which Shores headed in. The 2nd coming off a crossing pass from Mooney, which Shores knocked the keeper out of the way. The 3rd coming off a crossing pass from Gio which Shores just had to tap in. The defense was just as good limiting the Palo Alto team to just a few harmless shots.

The whistle blew and the U14 Girls - Incredibles were Champions of the Redwood League.
